Fact check: the lies told by the DOSB, German sport officials and politicians about Berlin's suitability for the Olympics

Are you sitting comfortably? Please take a deep breath. Make sure you can't fall out of your chair – and read the naked truth about Berlin's ability of hosting the Olympics. Facts, nothing but facts. So not what the DOSB and German politicians and some dubious lobbyists are telling you.

‘Sports use is not planned... not plannable... measures are not financially secured... an unauthorised track.
The truth about Berlin's 'Olympic venues'

Since 1991, I have been closely following all the Olympic bids. I have been to most IOC sessions and have also won journalism awards for my investigations on Olympic bids. I actually thought I had seen pretty much everything in this circus – but I have never seen such an amateurishly bad alleged bid as the German one.

Although: let's not forget that at the beginning of 2021. Michael Mronz, now an IOC member, who knows why?, who was the initiator of North Rhine-Westphalia's supposed bid for the 2032 Olympics, tried to make politicians from the German Ministry of the Interior and members of parliament believe that the IOC's decision on the 2032 Olympics host would not be made until 2023 at the earliest. That's how clueless lobbyist Mronz was. A few days later, the dubious decision was made in favour of Brisbane and Thomas Bach's buddy John Coates.

So now it's Germany' again. The DOSB is close to collapse, has financial problems and has just lost its chairman of the board – and will perhaps need a new president soon. But they say the want the Olympics – without having a plan, without having a financial clue. They have nothing. They are so helpless that some of them are still talking about the 2036 Olympics, but mostly about 2040.

Let's take a closer look at the supposed internal German favourite, Berlin. You won't believe it, but these are the facts.

Berlin's politicians and sports officials, along with all sorts of other so-called experts, including many journalists, have been spreading the nonsense for ages that the German capital has over 70 percent of the sports facilities needed for the Summer Olympics. Basically, Berlin could host the Olympics from one day to the next, according to the fairy tale.

‘We would have to modernise and renovate a bit, but our sports halls and arenas have the potential,’ says Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), day and night, 24/7. ’We also have the world's most awesome Olympic Stadium.’

Sports Senator Iris Spranger (SPD), Thomas Härtel (SPD), President of the Berlin Sports Federation (LSB) and previously a state secretary for sports for an eternity, and LSB Director Friedhard Teuffel, whose statements the day before yesterday were part of the Münchhausen test, also constantly talk about it.

It's just a shame that the claims don't match reality.

The truth is:

  • Until recently, the figure of €16 billion in costs for Berlin Olympics was still circulating internally.
  • Alleged Olympic venues are not suitable for sports, not even for simple athletic exercises – but are not intended for sporting events at all.
  • Others are unauthorised and unauthorised.
  • Much is neither planned nor financially secured.

Let's go into detail!

Let us recall what the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport told the main committee of the House of Representatives a few weeks ago. It was about an analysis by the DOSB and its advisors on sites allegedly suitable for the Olympics. I had discussed this in detail at the beginning of September...

... the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport had recently informed the main committee and the president of the Berlin House of Representatives:
